[HOLLOW EARTH]. Pair of Vintage Titles About the “Hollow Earth," including: REED, William (1830-1920). The Phantom of the Poles. New York: Walter S. Rocky Company, 1906. 8vo. Illustrated. 283, [3, blank] pp. Publisher's full olive green cloth, front board and spine lettered in gilt (spine toned and edgeworn, some rubbing, light soiling to boards, front hinge just starting, text a bit toned, a few gutters overopened, skewed). Very good. THE RARE FIRST EDITION OF THIS TITLE THEORIZING THAT THE EARTH IS HOLLOW AND INHABITED, AND THAT THE POLES ARE MERELY HOLES TO REACH THE CENTER. And: GARDNER, Marshall B. (1854-??). A Journey to the Earth's Interior or Have the Poles Really Been Discovered. Aurora, IL: Published by the Author, 1920. 8vo. Illustrated. 456 pp. Half-title present. Publisher's full burgundy cloth, front board stamped in blind, front board and spine stamped in gilt (spine toned and worn, boards rubbed and soiled, rear hinge cracked, skewed, gutter facing title-page cracked, text toned, soiled, endleaves soiled). Fair. REVISED AND ENLARGED EDITION. This title expands on the author's Hollow Earth theory (first published in 1913), and even includes a fictional chapter about a trip into the Earth's interior - thus making this book partly science fiction. An interesting pair.
