LAMBERT, Gustave (1824-1871). L'Expédition au Pole Nord. Paris: Au Siége de la Société, 1868. 8vo. Illustrated with folding chromolithograph map at rear. 114 pp. Publisher's printed wrappers (wrappers and text foxed, edgewear to wrappers, all text pages unopened). Near fine. FIRST EDITION OF THIS PAMPHLET TO RAISE FUNDS FOR AN EXPEDITION TO THE NORTH POLE. Lambert was a French hydrographer, who had the theory that summer sunshine at the North Pole would melt enough ice to allow a ship through. He spent years raising funds for the expedition, raising about half of the needed 600,000 Francs. He even went as far as buying a ship for the expedition, but the Franco-Prussian War broke out in 1870, stopping the fundraising effort. Lambert joined the French National Guard and died of wounds suffered in 1871, so the expedition never occurred.
