FIRST EDITION OF THIS PAMPHLET TO RAISE FUNDS FOR AN EXPEDITION TO THE NORTH POLE. Lambert was a French hydrographer, who had the theory that summer sunshine at the North Pole would melt enough ice to allow a ship through. He spent years raising funds for the expedition, raising about half of the needed 600,000 Francs. He even went as far as buying a ship for the expedition, but the Franco-Prussian War broke out in 1870, stopping the fundraising effort. Lambert joined the French National Guard and died of wounds suffered in 1871, so the expedition never occurred.
