[THE STEAMER “JEANNETTE"]. Trio of Titles About the Loss of the Steamer “Jeannette" in the Original Bindings, including: DANENHOWER, Lieutenant John W. Lieutenant Danenhower's Narrative of the “Jeannette". Illustrated. Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1882. Small 8vo. Illustrated with frontispiece, engraving of the “Jeannette" stuck in the ice, one double-page map, intertextual illustrations. [vii], vi-x, [ii], 102 pp. Half-title present. Original wrappers (wrappers mounted onto cardstock, new spine, some chipping, creasing, soiling to wrappers, text toned with occasional creasing, Brentano's inkstamp on front wrapper). FIRST EDITION IN THE RARE ORIGINAL WRAPPERS. Lt. Danenhower's narrative of the wreck of the Jeannette and the 500-mile journey by foot from Ostrov Genriyetta to the Lena Delta first appeared serially in the New York Herald, 1882. This first stand-alone published narrative is revised, corrected and expanded from the magazine serial. Much detail is paid to the ship's party's retreat on foot and by boat from the “Jeanette" at 77º15'N 155E in the Eastern Siberian Sea to the Lena Delta. Of the 33 original members of the expedition sent in 1879 from San Francisco attempting to reach the North Pole via Bering Strait, only 13 survived. This very rare and elusive first person account is a captivating and highly informative read. And: DELONG, George W. and [DELONG, Emma, editor]. Voyage of the Jeannette. The Ship and Ice Journals of George W. DeLong, Lieutenant Commander U.S.N. and Commander of the Polar Expedition of 1879 -1881. Boston: Broughton, Mifflin and Company 1884. 2 Volumes. Thick 4to, Volume I: (xii) 440pp., engraved portrait of George W. DeLong as frontispiece with tissue guard, 2 steel engraved plates, 6 wood engravings, 26 vignette illustrations, 8 maps and charts including foldouts. Volume II: (x), 470pp -- page numbering continuous between volumes and totally 911pp., Index, frontispiece tinted color lithograph entitled Cairn Tomb, Monument Hill, Lena Delta, 7 engravings, 15 vignette illustrations, 16 maps, charts and diagrams including foldouts. Publisher's full brown cloth, decoratively stamped in black and gilt (no foxing, folds or tears, prior ownership 1" diameter seal on second free end leaf, endleaves professionally replaced, ownership signatures of Charles Fox). A BRIGHT, VERY GOOD EARLY EDITION. Arctic Bibliography 3839. DeLong sailed from San Francisco in July 1879 with the intention of sailing through the Bering Strait and then entered the Pole byway of the New Siberian Islands and Wrangel Island. The last sighting of the “Jeannette" was at Wrangel Island during the first two years of the voyage. In the space of those two years the crew struggled against the ice and extremely harsh conditions, but they were unable to save the ship which was ultimately crushed by the ice. The crew escaped, but several perished in a storm, and several of those who reached land died from starvation and extreme conditions. This extensive account of the tragic voyage of the “Jeannette" was edited by DeLong's widow, Emma DeLong. And: NEWCOMB, Raymond Lee. Our Lost Explorers… Hartford, CT: American Publishing Company, 1882. 8vo. Illustrated. 479 pp. Publisher's full brown cloth, front board and spine stamped in silver, gilt, and black (some rubbing to cloth, text toned, front hinge repaired, some soiling at fore-edge at rear). Very good. THE SCARCE FIRST EDITION. Raymond Newcomb was naturalist of the expedition and provides an account of the Jeannette search expeditions, their discoveries, the burning of the Rodgers, etc. A very informative book for anyone interested in the tragic Jeannette Expedition.
