Small 4to. 2 folding lithographic maps, inserted at rear 9 wood-engraved plates. viii, [1]-197, [1, blank] pp. Bound in contemporary half brown calf over burgundy cloth boards, spine stamped in gilt in compartments, red and green gilt morocco lettering labels (spine worn, torn, and chipped, joints cracking, binding worn and soiled, hinges cracking, text and plates a bit toned, maps toned, with numerous tape repairs to versos and several tears). Fair. RARE FIRST EDITION INTENDED FOR PRIVATE CIRCULATION, ONE OF THE SCARCEST 19TH CENTURY TITLES ON THE ARCTIC. In it, Young describes the voyages in 1875-76 to Lancaster and Smith Sounds in search of Sir John Franklin's lost expedition, based on notes from his private journal. Young states in the preface that “at the suggestion of a few friends I have requested Mr. Stanford to publish it. The volume contains merely a simple record, or log, from notes in my private journal..." Young purchased the Pandora from his own funds for an expedition in search of Franklin's records.
