John Jacob Astor financed an expedition to the mouth of the Columbia River with the aim of establishing an American fur trading post for his Pacific Fur Company. It was designed to compete with British and Russian endeavors. The expedition ultimately failed due to the outbreak of the War of 1812, troubles with the Native Americans, and other issues.
