MORGAN, Dale L. (1914-1971) and WHEAT, Carl I. (1892-1966). Jedediah Smith and his Maps of the American West… With an Introduction by Carl I. Wheat. San Francisco: California Historical Society, 1954. Folio. Illustrated with 4 intertextual folding maps and 3 folding maps in a rear pocket. 86 pp. Publisher's full red cloth, spine lettered in gilt (light rubbing to binding, corners a bit bumped, folded maps in rear with minor marginal creasing). Fine. Rare. LIMITED EDITION, ONE OF 530 COPIES PRINTED, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY WHEAT TO FELLOW HISTORIAN JEFF DYKES ON THE FRONT BLANK: “To Jeff Dykes From one “historiacher" to another. Carl I. Wheat 4/20/65". From the collection of western and Texas artist Gerald Harvey Jones with his embossed stamp on the title-page. Laid-in are 3 clipped signatures of Carl I. Wheat and 4 clipped signatures of Wheat and Morgan (also included is a typed note signed from Mrs. LeMoyne Davis with the clipped signatures, relating how she got the clipped signatures from Mrs. Wheat). Wheat is perhaps best known for his reference set, Mapping of the Transmississippi West (1957-63). The present work is Morgan and Wheat's scholarly work on the long lost map of Jedidiah Smith's map of the 1820s (they based their work on a hand-amended later map by Charles Fremont, George Gibbs and Smith).
