Bound to style in modern full mottled calf, boards double-ruled in black, spine ruled in gilt, red gilt morocco lettering label, five raised bands, modern endleaves, contemporary laid-paper front and rear blanks (some toning, occasional soiling, a few tears, soiling, a few marginal creases to maps). Fine. FIRST EDITION OF BURGOYNE'S JUSTIFICATION ABOUT HIS CONDUCT DURING THE 1777 CAMPAIGN AND HIS DEFEAT AT SARATOGA. In this work, Burgoyne relates that his army was half of the size that he demanded, and was badly supplied. This is considered to be the best first-hand account of the Battle of Saratoga, one of the most decisive American victories in the Revolutionary War. The copy of Alexander Davison of Swarland (1750-1829) with his bookplate affixed to the modern fp (Davison was an English businessman and a close friend of Admiral Lord Nelson). Streeter II. 794.
