[TEXAS]. [HERTZOG, Carl (1902-1984), designer]. GRAVES, John (1920-2013). Goodbye to a River. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1960. 8vo. Illustrated throughout by Russell Waterhouse. [308] pp. Publisher's full reddish-brown cloth boards and spine stamped in dark brown, publisher's unclipped (“$4.50") dust jacket (minor rubbing to cloth binding, endleaves a bit toned; jacket has two small tape repairs to verso, spine toned and chipped, some toning, edgewear, a few short marginal tears or chips). A fine copy in a very good jacket. FIRST EDITION, SIGNED BY HERTZOG ON THE COLOPHON IN THE REAR. Laid-in are candid snapshots of Graves at his home in Texas, taken by the previous owner. This book is a “semi-historical" account of the author's canoe trip in 1957 down a portion of the Brazos River, which had been threatened by the construction of several dams. The popularity of this book prevented the building of the dams, and became an important book of modern conservation, sometimes compared to Thoreau's Walden.
