Frontispiece and folding map. 516 pp. Contemporary half brown calf over green marbled boards, spine ruled and tooled in black in compartments, black gilt morocco lettering label, five raised bands, marbled endleaves (binding scuffed and worn, rear joint starting, hinges starting, some occasional toning, soiling, foxing in text). Very good. EARLY EDITION. With “Our Slave States II." on the half-title. Olmstead (before he became one of America's pre-eminent landscape architects) was a journalist and publisher who took a saddle trip from New England to Texas, where he interviewed various people, including runaway slaves, who all went to Texas for a fresh start. This book, first published before the Civil War (in 1857), was one of the most important and informative books on Texas of its time.
