KEATE, George (1729-1797). An Account of the Pelew Islands, Situated in the Western Part of the Pacific Ocean. Composed from the Journals and Communications of Captain Henry Wilson, and Some of His Officers, Who, in August 1783, were there Shipwrecked in the Antelope… Dublin: Luke White, 1788. 8vo. Portrait frontispiece, fold-out map, and 15 plates and charts. [xxx], [1]-378 pp. No half-title. Bound in contemporary full calf, spine ruled in gilt, red gilt morocco lettering label (front board detached yet present, text split between [xviii] and xix, folding map chipped with a tape repair on verso with some loss to image, some toning, foxing, soiling to text, sticker residue on ffep., ownership signatures on fp). Fair. FIRST IRISH AND FIRST OCTAVO EDITION. This Irish edition, published later in the same year as the first edition (English in quarto format), reproduces all of the illustrations in a smaller format (this rapidly-produced Irish edition is technically a pirated edition). In 1783, the vessel, The Antelope, shipwrecked on a reef in the Palau Islands of Micronesia. The crew were rescued and befriended by the natives of a neighbouring island, where the crew built a replacement schooner. They then sailed to Macao, taking the chief's son, “Prince" Lee Boo (his portrait is in this edition), and then onto England. Unfortunately, Lee Boo died of smallpox soon after his arrival in England.
