[xii], 1-144, [2, blank] pp. Bound in a special full brown morocco presentation binding, all edges gilt, gilt inner dentelles, silk moire endpapers (small scuff mark on spine headcap). A beautifully executed printed work and binding in fine condition. An interesting biography featuring a very detailed account of the repatriation of John Howard Payne's remains to Washington, thirty years after he died in Africa. This account leaves nothing to the imagination as far as the transportation of the remains are concerned.died in Tunis in 1852 and was buried there in St. George's Protestant Cemetery. Thirty years later, in February 1883, Payne's remains were disinterred and brought to the U.S. by steamer, at the suggestion and expense of the philanthropist W.W. Corcoran of Washington, DC, who arranged reinterment in his home city. The coffin with Payne's remains was received with honors in New York and transported to City Hall, where it was held in state while several thousand people visited the hall to pay respects.
