[389], [1, blank]; 426; 448 pp. Bound in modern half red levant morocco over red marbled boards, spines ruled and tooled in gilt in compartments, brown and black gilt morocco lettering labels, five raised bands, top edges gilt, marbled endleaves (some toning, foxing, occasional soiling in text, previous owner's signature on versos of frontispieces in volumes I and II). Near fine. FIRST EDITION OF ONE OF "the greatest works of travel ever published" (Penzer). Sir Richard Francis Burton was “the first English Christian to enter Mecca of his own free will as a true Mohammedan pilgrim, and not as a convert" (Penzer, p. 47).
