With half-titles. 303, [1, blank]; 295, [1, blank] pp. Bound in nineteenth-century half blue morocco over blue marbled boards, spines ruled, tooled, and lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, top edges gilt, marbled endleaves (spines sunned to green, spine edges and joints worn, some edgewear to boards and corners, text with occasional light foxing, map with a later cloth tape repair on verso near gutter). Very good. FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST BOOK WRITTEN BY BURTON BASED ON HIS TENURE AS CONSUL IN WEST AFRICA. His name on the title-pages is suppressed (“by A F. R. G. S.") as he originally wanted to publish this anonymously. Penzer pp. 71-72.
