[MANUSCRIPT MAPS]. [WORLD WAR II]. Group of 5 Hand-Drawn Maps of Europe by American P. O. W. s. [Europe: ca. 1940s]. Manuscript maps in ink and color, all on onionskin paper. Sizes range from approximately 15 ½ x 9" to 7 ½ x 9 ¼". Worn, soiled, creased, chipped. Still, fine surviving examples of items that one would not expect to have survived. These surprisingly detailed maps (they even have scale notations) include: the area of Sagan, Poland - scale 1:12,500, including compound areas, German facilities, railways and the neighboring area (Sagan was the location of Stalag Luft III, the camp made famous by “The Great Escape" by 73 Allied P. O. W. s. And: the area of Moosburg, Germany. And: the area surrounding Augsburg, Germany. And: an area of central Italy. And: an area of central Poland. Additional information provided by the consignor: “These kinds of things were done inside camps as escape aids. Done on lightweight-tissue paper for ease of destruction if caught. Often trouble was the immediate area outside the camp to the local town. Once there, these maps were for general line of travel. The guy I got them from was a former prisoner at Stalag Luft VII (Moosburg, Germany)."
