[NASA EQUIPMENT]. Self Contained Atmospheric Protection Ensemble (SCAPE) Helmet. [Bethesda: The Martin Company, ca. 1950s-60s]. Helmet manufactured by the Martin Company which specialized in aerospace gear. Plastic helmet with clear plastic front (with hole at bottom, for an air supply attachment, not included) and leather and cloth webbing inside. It was probably part of the early NASA rocket or missile programs (during the Mercury, Gemini, or Apollo eras), and was very likely used for refueling of rockets or missiles. The helmet is tagged and serial numbered on the inside with a Martin Company label, which states: “Coveralls RKR Fuel Hdlrg CMK g/r222 [?]". The helmet was actually used so it has scuffs and cracks—that said, it is structurally sound and presents well. The back is marked “MR" and has a stenciled number “58" on the sides. With a later custom-made metal display stand, on which the helmet hangs.
