[NASA MEMORABILIA]. WENDT, Guenter (1923-2010). Signed Photo. [N.p., n.d., ca. 1968, though actually ca. 2000s]. Later color photo of Wendt in his work overalls outside of the Apollo 11 capsule during a training exercise. Inscribed by Wendt in marker: “Apollo 11 - Training Guenter F. Wendt Pad leader". Approximately 10 x 8". Fine. Wendt was the legendary launching pad leader for some of the most important American space missions, including Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, and Apollo/Soyuz. He has been featured in numerous documentaries about the space program, easily recognizable with his bow ties and glasses. As astronaut Fred Haise (b. 1933) wrote fondly about Wendt in his autobiography, Never Panic Early (2022), "I volunteered again to be a member of the close-out crew for Guenter Wendt, or as we fondly called him, 'der Fuhrer of der Launch Pad [a nickname coined by John Glenn].'"
