He founded a circus, emphasizing animal acts (for a long time, he was P. T. Barnum's greatest competitor). He eventually sold his circus to James A. Bailey; Bailey eventually combined his circus with Barnum, and later, Ringling Bros – to form the famous Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey circus.
