Eden was Prime Minister from 1955-57, following the tenure of Sir Winston Churchill. Although a skilled diplomat, he blundered in the handling of the 1956 Suez Crisis, by misjudging the United States' opposition to military intervention in Suez. This became a huge political defeat and embarrassment for Britian, signaling the virtual end of Britain as a world power, and the emergence of the United States as a superpower.
