Illustrated with several plates, including an engraved plate of arctic exploration, and a folding map depicting the search for Sir John Franklin. 760 pp. Bound in contemporary half blue calf over purple cloth, spine ruled, tooled, and lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, burgundy gilt morocco lettering label, marbled endleaves (spine sunned, binding quite worn and soiled, hinges starting, folding map of Sir John Franklin's expedition torn at crease (nearly detached), text toned with occasional soiling, foxing. Good. The Last Sketch appears on pp. 485-498, and the article on the search for Sir John Franklin appears on pp. 96-121. FIRST APPEARANCE OF THE FIRST TWO CHAPTERS OF BRONTË'S UNFINISHED NOVEL, COLLECTED BY HER FRIEND, WILLIAM MAKEPEACE THACKERAY, WHO WROTE THE INTRODUCTION TO THESE CHAPTERS. These two chapters (all that she completed before her tragic death) were the basis of the completed novel by Clare Boylan (titled Emma Brown).
