Both illustrated by Harry Furniss. 400, [4, ads]; 423 [1, blank], [6, ads] pp. Both bound in publisher's full red cloth, boards triple-ruled in gilt, gilt central motifs, spines stamped in gilt (Sylvie and Bruno Concluded recased with later endleaves, worn, soiled, some gutters overopened, ownership signatures (Sylvie and Bruno has more soiling, wear), both skewed). Generally good. FIRST EDITIONS. Laid-in is a printed Advertisement from Lewis Carroll, dated Christmas, 1893, stating that the “Sixtieth Thousand" issue of Through the Looking Glass has poorly executed illustrations, “as to make the book not worth buying." He urges buyers to return them to the publisher in exchange for an improved version. He then writes that instead of destroying unsold copies, that they should be given away to various charities and libraries.
