Publisher's full brick-red pebbled cloth, boards decoratively paneled in blind, front board lettered in gilt, publisher's brown coated endleaves (binding rubbed and lightly soiled, sunned at edges, joints soiled with occasional tears, hinges just starting, some minor wear to endleaves, a few gutters overopened or cracking, some occasional soiling in text, text a bit toned). FIRST EDITION OF THIS UNCOMMON BOOK OF POETRY BY THIS CIVIL WAR GENERAL, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY HIM ON THE FFEP: “To Henry [?] Stoker [?] Esq with compliments of D C McCallum Brooklyn Jun 27th 1874". McCallum was a railroad engineer and the general manager of the New York and Erie railroads. During the Civil War, McCallum was the Union Brevet Major General of the United States Military Railroads. He pioneered general principles of management and is credited with developing the modern organizational chart.
