[CIVIL WAR]. PORTER, Fitz John (1822-1901). Gen'l Fitz John Porter's Reply to Hon. Z. Chandler's Speech in the U. S. Senate, Feb. 21, 1870. Morristown, NJ: [Privately Printed], 1870. 8vo. 20 pp. Printed wrappers (wrappers toned, spine torn, some chipping to wrappers). Very good. FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED BY PORTER ON THE FRONT WRAPPER: “Senator Bayard Compliments of F. J. Porter". During the Second Battle of Bull Run, Porter halted a hazardous attack ordered by Major General John Pope (1822-1892), which Porter (and Major General Irvin McDowell (1818-1885)) felt was too dangerous. Second Bull Run was a huge defeat for the Union, and Pope blamed Porter for it; he charged Porter with insubordination and initiated a Court Martial of Porter. Porter was found guilty in 1863, and was stripped of his command in disgrace. Porter spent the next several decades (despite performing other jobs honorably) trying to restore his good name, finally having his Court Martial dismissed in 1886 (much of his Court Martial was politically motivated). Senator Thomas F. Bayard of Delaware (1828-1898) campaigned for Porter's restoration. An excellent association.
