[FRANKLIN, Benjamin (1706-1790), attributed to]. [ALMON, John (1737-1805)]. The Political Register, and Impartial Review of New Books for MDCCLXVIII. Volume the Third. London: H. Beevor, 1768. 8vo. Illustrated with 5 engraved plates, including 1 folding (one of the plates “The Colonies Reduced/Its Companion" is supposed to have been conceived and designed by Franklin). 390 pp. Near contemporary quarter calf over marbled boards, black gilt morocco lettering label and gilt number on spine (binding worn, lightly soiled, some wear, toning, soiling to text which is uncut). Very good. FIRST EDITION OF THIS VOLUME, WITH THE PLATE ATTRIBUTED TO BEN FRANKLIN. According to Franklin's son, William, his father had designed this plate with 2 panels to show what would happen if the British government continued their oppressive measures against their American colonies. This was proven to be prophetic some years later, at the outbreak of the Revolutionary War. This volume also has other pre-Revolutionary War articles – about the suppression of the authority of the New York legislature, the repeal of the Stamp Act, and more.
