Inscribed by War Department Librarian David Fitzgerald on fp., above Holabird's signature (“From David Fitzgerald Esq. Librarian War Department.") Also with the bookplate of architect and collector Raymond L. J. Riling beneath Holabird's bookplate on fp. With numerous pencil markings throughout – possibly by Holabird. Holabird was the 17th Quartermaster General of the U. S. Army. He greatly improved the function of the Quartermaster's department, making sure that dedicated service people served, not just rank-and-file enlisted. He also took great pains to improve the equipment and clothing that soldiers had, improving their service and morale.
