[KING CHARLES I (1600-1649), subject]. Eikon Basilike. The Pourtraiture of His Sacred Majesty King Charles I. In His Solitudes and Sufferings. [Bound with:] The Royal Martyr: or, the Life and Death of King Charles I. London: D. Browne, et al., 1727. 8vo. With large folding engraved plate of King Charles. [viii], [1]-224; [236] pp. Bound in contemporary full paneled calf, rebacked to style in later brown morocco, spine tooled in gilt and blind, brown gilt morocco lettering label, five raised bands (binding worn, joints cracking, hinges cracking, text toned with occasional soiling, foxing, plate with edgewear, tears). This famous Royalist publication was supposedly the autobiography of Charles I (who had just been executed) but was most likely written by John Gauden. It was so controversial that Parliament commissioned a response written by no less than John Milton (1608-1674, his bookEikonoklastes), and Milton was also the first to doubt that Charles I was the author ofEikon Basilike.
