[LOGAN, Joshua (1908-1988), association]. HAMMERSTEIN II, Oscar (1895-1960). Lyrics. New York: Simon and Schuster, 1949. 8vo. 215, [1, blank] pp. Publisher's full burgundy cloth, front board and spine stamped in gray, publisher's price-clipped dust jacket (endleaves toned, offset, some foxing to endleaves and edges of text block, small area of tape residue on ffep.; jacket toned, worn, torn, soiled, chipped, tape residue on jacket verso). A near fine copy in a fair jacket. FIRST EDITION, WITH A 4-PAGE LATER (1968) INSCRIPTION FROM ONE OF HAMMERSTEIN'S COLLABORATORS, JOSHUA LOGAN, TO COMMEMORATE LOGAN'S SON'S GRADUATION FROM COLLEGE. Inscription is on both sides of the ffep. and the first blank. Some excerpts from the inscription: “Here is a book that is now out of print and yet a few years ago I was partly responsible for or at least part of it: When Oscar H & I were writing the libretto of South Pacific I introduced Oscar to the Dictaphone an electrical affair which recorded the spoken word on a plastic belt…When I first suggested bring a dictaphone & a secretary with a [?] machine down to Doylestown, Pa where we were to work together on his “book" of South Pacific, he demurred. He said “You're asking me to drive an airplane. I think we should at least start with a horse & buggy." I said “We haven't got time for a horse & buggy. South Pacific goes into rehearsal in a month & you have only finished the first scene & a sketch of the second & we need a whole play - and we need it yesterday."" The inscription goes on to relate more of the creation of South Pacific, and his friendship with Hammerstein. Logan was a legendary theater producer, director, and writer, and also directed several films. A superb association.
