[NEWSPAPERS]. “Dewey Defeats Truman" 20 Copies of This Infamous Newspaper. Chicago: Chicago Daily Tribune, November 3, 1948. Folded issues of this erroneous newspaper. Mastheads partially cut out (with a razor or similar implement, several pages behind the first page are likewise cut), but the headlines are intact; newspapers are toned, soiled, creased, some with discolor possibly due to mildew. Fair. This early edition newspaper falsely proclaimed Governor Thomas Dewey as the president-elect in 1948. The Tribune had leaned Republican for some time and had showed disdain for Truman and the Democrats for years. They eagerly published this newspaper, based on the prediction of their Washington, D. C. political analyst, Arthur Sears Henning, who had previously correctly predicted the last 4 out of 5 presidential elections. Unfortunately, Henning famously goofed on this election. Two days after this issue was published, Truman got an issue of this paper while on a whistle-stop tour of St. Louis on his train, and held this newspaper aloft, being photographed doing so. This photograph became one of the most famous American political photographs of the 20th century.
