[WORLD WAR II]. LEWIS, Wyndham (1882-1957). Hitler und Sein Werk (“Hitler and His Work"). Berlin: Verlag von Reimer Hobbing, 1932. 8vo. [184] pp. Publisher's printed wrappers with original wrap-around band (“An Englishman's Verdict on Hitler and National Socialism" – translated from the German). Some wear, creasing, offsetting to wrappers, some foxing, occasional soiling to text; wrap-around band is separate with a large tear near spine. Very good. Housed in modern clamshell case. FIRST GERMAN-LANGUAGE EDITION OF LEWIS' BOOK IN PRAISE OF HITLER. In 1931, Lewis traveled to Berlin and wrote a book, Hitler (1931), in which he praised Hitler as a “man of peace." After a second visit to Germany in 1937, Lewis drastically changed his opinion of Hitler and the Nazis and retracted his previous praise. Although he had earlier written books or articles critical of Jews, he wrote The Jews; Are They Human? (1939), which was an attack on antisemitism. The same year he wrote The Hitler Cult, an attack on Hitler and completely repudiated his earlier stance.
