[CHICAGO FIRE]. Archive of Autograph Letters or Documents Related to the Recovery of Chicago After the Great Fire. [V.p., ca. 1871-90]. Nearly 21 items, including an autograph letter from George Overton of Taunton, England to Sarah Grey of Chicago (March 6 and March 10, 1871, 4 8vo pages on one leaf) “Friday – Mar. 10th Your most welcome letter – my dear Sarah came to hand this morning - & I am most thankful to find you can report that you & yours are well, & I do hope & trust that it ere it be long you will so far recover what you have lost, by having it mad up to you by a generous Public that you will be the gainer & not the loser – we are told by the papers that the supplies sent in are so great that they have been restrained from sending more – I hope it is so & that you will not be forgot It must have been just before the fire happened I think, that you ought to have received my last letters which I posted on Monday 25th Sept…" Other documents are mostly related to George Harris (most likely a butcher) and his insurance claims and payments. Sizes of documents range from 11 x 8 ½" to 2 x 8". The usual wear, creasing, toning, soiling. Generally, very good. A rare glimpse of the recovery of the horrific Great Chicago Fire of 1871.
