ROOSEVELT, Theodore (1858-1919). Typed Letter Signed to His Former Secretary of the Navy. New York: June 7th 1917. One 8vo page on his personal office stationery at the Metropolitan building. Addressed “Dear Mr. Metcalf:" to V. H. Metcalf of Oakland, Ca (Victor Howard Metcalf, 1853-1936, was Roosevelt's Secretary of Commerce and Labor and later, Roosevelt's Secretary of the Navy). Signed by Roosevelt at bottom right, with his manuscript addition “to you and yours," after the typed “With heartfelt good wishes,". Sight 8 ½ x 7". Matted and framed under glass with an engraved portrait of Roosevelt. Frame size 16 ¼ x 19". Letter lightly toned and foxed, with 1 horizontal and 1 vertical crease. Very good. In this letter, Roosevelt seems to answer a request to become involved in World War I: “It was fine to hear from you; but of course you know I am not allowed to take troops abroad." A wonderful brief letter to a previous cabinet member. Not examined out of frame. With COA of Dr. Richard Saffro.
