DOWNS, T. Nelson (1867 – 1938). One Page ALS to Harry Houdini. Dated June 2, 1926, Downs writes on his pictorial letterhead from Marshalltown, Iowa, to his old friend Houdini: “Sorry I can't be at the S.A.M. dinner this year, but I hope to make it about every third year. Please extend my regards & Etc. I was also sorry to missed [sic] seeing your show in Chicago, but you closed before I could get around, as I was somewhat busy myself this season in & around close to home. Best regards to you 2 & everyone. As ever – Sincerely – T Nelson." One 4to sheet, chipped with small losses at the lower right. Downs and Houdini started in show business at about the same time, both finding great success in London at the dawn of the twentieth century. Both found fame as “specialty" magic acts, climbing the ladder of fame concurrently. This letter was written just four months before Houdini's death.
