Changing or Production Box. British, ca. 1880. Sturdily constructed burlwood box with scalloped trim conceals a trap door in the base and a sizeable load chamber in the rear. Objects deposited into the base could be transformed into a large quantity of flowers or silks. Alternatively, the trap could be used to remove items from a well (or vanish them into one). 10 ½ x 9 x 7". Chips to extremities, but extremely fine construction and in good working condition. From the collection of the late British magician Paul Daniels, and with a COA tracing the ownership to his collection, SIGNED by Daniels. A handsome Victorian-era magic prop and the first of its type we have encountered.
