Title in red and black, portrait frontispiece, 15 photogravure plates, 5 maps (2 of which tipped into the back, instead of being in a rear pocket), 2 large folding panoramas, numerous illustrations from photographs in the text. Original green cloth stamped in gilt (spines toned, some wear, soiling to boards, endleaves toned, occasional faint foxing in text and plates - although a rear pocket is called-for, this copy was bound without one - the maps are present). Good. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION of the harrowing account of Amadeo's expedition toward the North Pole, beating Nansen's “Farthest North" record of 86° 34'.
