Bound in contemporary full tan calf, boards triple-ruled in gilt and decoratively ruled in blind, spine ruled, tooled, in gilt in compartments, brown gilt morocco lettering label, five raised bands, gilt board edges and turn-ins, marbled edges and endleaves (binding worn, soiled, front joint cracking, front hinge broken, rear hinge starting, some toning, foxing to text and plates). Good. THE RARE FIRST EDITION OF BACK'S PERSONAL ACCOUNT OF HIS FINAL ARCTIC EXPEDITION (sometimes known as the “Frozen Strait" expedition). Back had been commissioned to survey the coast near Prince Regent's Inlet; unfortunately, his vessel had become ice-bound for nearly 10 months. Luckily, the H. M. S.
