This novel, the fictionalized account of his boyhood in Shanghai during World War II, was the basis of the 1987 film, starring Christian Bale and John Malkovich, directed by Stephen Spielberg, and with a screenplay by Tom Stoppard. It garnered several Academy Award nominations.
