BARROW, John, Sir (1764-1848). A Chronological History of Voyages into the Arctic Regions; Undertaking Chiefly for the Purpose of Discovering a North-East, North-West, or Polar Passage between the Atlantic and Pacific. London: John Murray, 1818. 8vo. 377; 48 pp. Half-title present. Folding engraved map at front (loose but present), 3 inset views at end. Contemporary half black morocco over marbled boards, spine gilt, marbled endleaves (binding heavily worn, spine and boards detached, ffep and first few leaves loose (but present), text a bit toned with occasional foxing). Fair. FIRST EDITION. Barrow was a British geographer, explorer, and avid promoter of Arctic exploration. As second secretary of the admiralty, he promoted numerous voyages to further knowledge of geography and navigation. In his position at the Admiralty, Barrow was a great promoter of Arctic voyages of discovery, including those of John Ross (his first expedition), William Edward Parry, James Clark Ross, and John Franklin. Point Barrow in Alaska is named for him. A scarce work, not in Arctic Bibliography.
