BENEDICT, Hugall (1873 – 1955). Collection of Vintage Magic Ephemera and Instructions. Over 30 pieces, 1890s – 1940s, including photographically illustrated advertising brochures, invitations, programs, tickets, three ALSs (two to Stanley Collins), and a quantity of handwritten and typed instructions and scripts for various routines and effects, among them tricks devised by Annemann and Paul Curry, but primarily describing routines used and performed by Benedict. Brochures advertise Benedict’s varied programs including an Anti-Spiritualistic Séance, ventriloquism, hand shadows, and a wide range of parlor magic. Also included is a Jacobs Ladder effect manufactured by Harry Leat (“Magic in a Name” cards) owned and used by Benedict which visibly transforms his first name into his last, likely used as an introduction to his magic show. The largest item 4to, with most items neatly kept and in very good condition. Dr. Dawes wrote about Hugall Benedict’s contributions to magic in the Rich Cabinet Collection Volume 3, pp. 796–99.
