CARTWRIGHT, George (1739/40–1819). A Journal of Transactions and Events, during a Residence of Nearly Sixteen Years on the Coast of Labrador. Newark: Allin and Ridge, 1792. 3 volumes, 4to (298 x 229 mm). Engraved portrait frontispiece, 2 large engraved folding maps including one on two sheets, list of subscribers in Volume I (offsetting to text from plates, frontispiece heavily foxed, offsetting to maps with minor spotting near margins, second map with closed tear to lower image near gutter). Modern half polished calf over marbled boards, raised bands, black leather lettering–pieces gilt, renewed endpapers (light marginal foxing very occasional). FIRST EDITION, LARGE PAPER COPY of Cartwright’s account of the six journeys he made to both Labrador and Newfoundland between 1770–1786 to trade with the Inuit people and collect valuable information regarding the fisheries and hunting grounds as Field described as being “among the great mass of details of a fur hunter’s life, which these immense quartos afford us, some particulars of the Aborigines of the Peninsula of Labrador may be gleaned which are not elsewhere available.” Sabin 11150 (mistakenly calling for 5 maps); Field 245; Lande 106.
