8vo. Original light gray cloth, spine stamped in black (minor rubbing, soiling to binding); original dust jacket (spine a bit toned, with some edgewear, mild chipping, minor soiling, toning to jacket - the publisher’s slug on the rear flap is still present at the bottom).

FIRST EDITION of the basis for the classic film, Red River (1948). INSCRIBED BY CHASE ON THE FRONT PASTEDOWN: “For Bill Welch- because I like him-Borden Chase Encino 3/4/48”. LAID-IN IS AN INSCRIBED PHOTO OF MONTGOMERY CLIFT IN COWBOY GARB AS HIS CHARACTER, MATTHEW GARTH: “To Peter Montgomery Clift”. On the verso of the photo: “No. W. 523 “Picturegoer” Series, 128 Long Acre, London”. Red River starred John Wayne and Montgomery Clift, and was directed by Howard Hawks. This film was designated as the 5th best Western of all time by AFI’s Top Ten List of 2008; in 1990, the Library of Congress selected this film for preservation in the National Film Registry.
