CURTIS, Edward Sheriff (American, 1868-1952). Story Telling Apache. [1903/1904]. Platinum print. Signed in brown ink lower right. Blindstamp copyrighted E.S. Curtis lower left (date illegible). Image appeared as Plate 11 in Portfolio 1, “The North American Indian, Vol. 1. The Apache. The Jicarillas. The Navaho.” Image 12 ½ x 16 3/8”; frame 21 x 25”. Some rippling along upper edge of paper. Minor rubbing. Very minimal evidence of conservation. Image is in excellent/very good condition; bright and crisp with deep tones. The subjects of the image were described by Curtis in Volume 1: “A story-telling group, particularly typical of these people. The Apache often sit about and exchange stories of the past or of today.” All proceeds benefit the Howard L. Gottlieb Foundation, which has been supporting nonprofit organizations in the fine arts since 2015.
