DELRIO, Martin Anton (Spanish, 1551-1608). Disquisitionum Magicarum Libri Sex. 1640. 4to. Contemporary vellum binding. Ink date and initials on spine. Some browning. Disquisitionum Magicarum Libri Sex was originally printed in three volumes in 1599 and 1600. Traditionally regarded as a slightly lesser version of Heinrich Kramer’s Malleus Maleficarum, Del Rio’s text was nonetheless hugely popular and would be printed well into the 18th century, long after other, similar works had gone out of print. Historian Hugh Trevor-Roper has credited the volume with introducing witch burnings into the Low Countries and by extension, placed the blame for the numerous executions by fire directly at Delrio’s feet.
