FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED BY DODGSON on the half-title to Mrs. F. Holiday with “from the author” in his customary purple ink, dated January 1887. Mrs. F. Holiday (neé Virginie Philippon) was married to Francis Augustus Holiday, the brother of Henry Holiday (1839-1927), illustrator of Dodgson’s The Hunting of the Snark. In Dodgson’s Diaries, the author met Mr. and Mrs. Francis Holiday on 2 September 1884 and later stayed with his “new friends” on 9 February 1885. Lovett 178; Williams-Madan-Green-Crutch 194.
