DOYLE, Arthur Conan (1859-1930). The Lost World. London: Henry Frowde, [1914].
Large 8vo. 13 mounted plates including portrait frontispiece (several in color). Original light brown cloth over beveled boards, boards and spine stamped in brown, spine lettered in gilt, blue top stain, illustrated endleaves (spine a touch sunned, else fine); ORIGINAL SLIPCASE with printed spine label (edgewear, some splitting).
FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, SECOND ISSUE, LARGE PAPER EDITION (“New Edition”), one of 810 copies. A rare variant unrecorded by Green and Gibson: the foot of the spine reads “OXFORD” and the lettering on the upper cover is stamped in brown rather than the usual gilt. The bibliographers mention that a number of copies were bound at a later date and have a different imprint on the spine (“MILFORD”) but they state that the covers are otherwise the same.
AN EXCEPTIONAL COPY in the exceedingly rare publisher’s slipcase, of which we have not been able to locate any at auction nor was one seen by Green & Gibson. Green & Gibson, A37d.
