8vo. 8 plates after paintings, frontispiece after a photograph. Original red cloth, gilt-lettered spine (a touch a rubbing at ends and fore-corners); folding box.

“New Edition”, INSCRIBED BY DOYLE on the title-page. In 1914, Hodder & Stoughton sold the remaining stock of the first English edition to Smith, Elder & Company. When Smith, Elder was sold to John Murray, the bulk of the 6/- edition remained, which were reissued by John Murray in 1917 with an inserted title-page.
