Original blue cloth, front board ruled in white and stamped in gilt, spine lettered in gilt (few tiny discrete areas of restoration to spine, front joint professionally strengthened); ORIGINAL DUST JACKET (extremities professionally restored, few tiny touch ups to panels, some minor soiling). Provenance: lot 88, Swann Galleries, 20 June 2013; lot 41, Sotheby’s London, 20 October 2016.

FIRST ENGLISH TRADE EDITION, IN THE EXCEEDINGLY RARE AND VIRTUALLY UNOBTAINABLE ORIGINAL DUST JACKET which depicts the iconic image of Arthur Conan Doyle disguised as Professor Challenger (this is the only copy to appear at auction). The book edition was published on 15 October 1912, the serialization in Strand Magazine having started in April the same year. The Lost World is considered the author’s most celebrated work outside the Sherlock Holmes canon. Green and Gibson A37a.
