FINSTER, Howard (American, 1916-2001). “Mixing Board for Two Years or Longer…” 1995. Multi-media on ½” thick wooden board. 31 ½ x 17 ¾”. Signed by Finster with a caption on the front. Also written by Finster in marker pen on the verso: “36,000 568 – Works of Art May 4, 1995 Howard Finster [signature] Mixing Board Used About Two Years Finger Dipping and Rubbing in Colors Backgrounds for Art Mixing Board for Working on Art”. Also on verso, Finster has drawn a “smiley face” on a knot in the wood. An intricate and unusual piece by this artist. Inspired to art by his religious beliefs, Finster (a Baptist Minister) is considered one of the most prominent Outsider Artists. He is perhaps best known for his album covers for Talking Heads (Little Creatures, 1985) and R.E.M. (Reckoning, 1984). Despite being perhaps the most successful artist of the Outsider art movement (as well as modern folk art and “Naïve” art), his focus was always using his art to spread the Gospel.
