Printed contract, 4 4to pages on one folded bifolium sheet of light yellow paper. Each page approximately 11 x 8 ½”; unfolded size approximately 11 x 17”. Several passages crossed out, several typed amendments, file inkstamp at bottom left corner of p. 1. two horizontal creases, some other faint creases and light wrinkling. Fine. Signed by Greene, the publisher’s representative, and two witnesses, including Greene’s wife, Vivienne Greene (1904-2003) who witnessed his signature, and an illegible signature who witnessed the publisher’s signature. Before the signatures, there is a typed addition: “The Author agrees to give the Publishers an option on his next two books.” This contract gives Greene a 10% share of the sales on the first 5,000 copies sold, and a 15% share on all copies sold thereafter. Rumour at Nightfall, Greene’s third novel, failed to replicate the success of his first novel, The Man Within (also published by Doubleday, Doran in the United States).
