LAUGHTON, Charles (1899 – 1962). Two autograph letters signed. Both on 15, Percy Street notepaper (10 x 7 7/8"), both signed “Charles Laughton," to George Grossmith. In the first (4 June 1929) “just a line to confirm my repeated assurances to you that I am not only prepared but anxious to play in ‘Beauty'…Since I came back from my honeymoon some two months ago I have consistently refused every offer in the hope of finding a part to which I could give my heart." In the second letter (n.d.) Laughton continues: “Only to-day have I been able to lay my hands on Michael Morton's version of ‘Beauty'... in any case it would perhaps be better for you to have read both versions…" Laughton and Isabel Jeans starred in “Beauty" at the Strand Theatre in 1929.
