8vo (178 x 127 mm). Title-page printed in red and blue with an illustration, 12 full-page plates including maps, photographs and drawings, 15 illustrations after drawings in the text. Original color pictorial stiff paper wrappers (some very light spotting); original dust jacket depicting an image of the Kainan Maru (some spotting, light chipping at extreme ends).

FIRST EDITION. One of three books written by Nobu Shirase, written two years before his death in 1946. This book was written for a juvenile audience and presents an overview of exploration encompassing both the north polar and south polar regions. Shirase was one of the few explorers during the heroic era of exploration to have ventured into both north and south polar regions. He explored the Alaskan Arctic for one year during the Chishima - Kuril Island Expedition in the late 1800s and into the Antarctic regions during the Japanese Antarctic Expedition 1910-1912.
