This title written in favor of the Americans.The work sparked numerous vitriolic responses, none more vehement than that of Thomas Paine. Paine objected to what he claimed were numerous falsehoods in the Abbe’s history, though he admitted that it was likely the text was stolen by an unscrupulous printer and rushed into print before Raynal had a chance to revise it. One of the more colorful contemporary histories of the Revolution. Scarce. [Bound with:] [CERISIER, Antoine Marie (1749-1828), translator]. London, Printed for J. Bew, [1780]. xvi, 124 pp. Nice copy of this rare pamphlet on the United States Revolution in the original first edition. Published anonymously. Not translated from the English and, apparently not printed in London. (Sabin Vol. 3 pp. 459). The author Antoine Marie Cerisier was attached to the French Embassy at the Hague (Netherlands). “Probably published in Europe, an original work consisting of conversations between North, Bute, Franklin and others.” (Howes). Dublin, 1783. xvi, 216, [8] pp. Bound together in contemporary half calf leather binding over marbled boards, double gilt ruled spine with five raised bands, a red gilt lettered morocco label (joints starting, some wear to binding, some gutters starting, some occasional soiling, foxing in text).
